The world's first assault rifle, the MP 44 was developed in Germany for use in WWII. The assault rifle started as a combination of submachine guns, light machine guns, and bolt action rifles, giving as many of the advantages of all three while fitting into a compact form factor that would work out well during CQB, or close quarter battles. While the rounds that it fires are not as powerful as some of the larger rifle rounds, they are significantly more powerful than pistol cartridges. The only serious weaknes of the MP 44 was the weight and strenght of the joint where the stock attached.
